Another question showing my ignorance here...

I have just finished building my website (not yet published)... and I have photos in an "images" folder that are ridiculously large.

I thought that as long as I made the photos on each page of my website small then I would not have loading time difficulties.

On pages where I only have one or two photos the pages load pretty quickly. But on one page I have titled "photos" the page takes quite some time to load. There are only 14 mini sized photos on the page so I'm wondering if it takes so long because it first has to access the data from the images file?

Therefore if I resize all the photos in the images file to something more reasonable my loading time will improve?

Sorry to be such a dumbar$e...

Yes it will. Although you may only display the image small, it doesn't effect the amount of data downloaded.

If the images are JPEG you can reduce the size of the image considerably, down to less than 50 kBs, without any noticeable loss of quality. Almost all image manipulating software will allow you do this. I manage quite well the Photo Editor that comes with MS Office.

You should always resize images to the exact same size that you will display (remember to always work off of copies and save the originals!).

Also, images for the web should be at 72 dpi.
