Is it possible to layer cells in tables using the z-index?

I want 1 of the cells in the table above to overlap the table below.

I'm pretty sure there's no way to do this. A table is an equal number of boxes high and wide. I don't see any way you could have them overlap.

What about nesting two table elements inside a DIV tag, which can use a z-index? Maybe that would do what you want.
