Say I have a web page with an applet. Is it possible to communicate with the applet from a stand alone java program on the local machine? Basically the stand alone needs to make some icons appear in the servlet if the local machine changes certain states. Is there a different way to do this?

note: only one way communication is needed. The stand alone needs to be able to send messages to the applet. The applet of course wont be able to communicate with the stand alone because of security resrictions.
In case anyone is wondering what this is for: there is an in car display that is displaying a web page with an applet. I need a way for the in car computer to update the display when the car engages its antilock break system (assume that my stand alone knows how to test for breaking).
