i have a very high speed connection at my college campus. however, whenever i try to use like limewire or morpheus or any other file sharing program, the speed just like dies and sometimes the programs can't connect to the networks at all. any idea what could be wrong and how to fix it? ive tried a proxy server but it didnt seem to work. so, any help would be appreciated

There's nothing wrong. The school is most likely blocking your usage of file sharing programs, as many schools are doing. Could be anything from blocking the ports needed, or whatever.

Sure, there are ways to "fix" it. :) ha ha.

I'm not going to post any here, as that's not exactly in the spirit of what goes on at computing.net. Just keep using Google and you'll find some different ways out there.

Please keep in mind though...bypassing the college firewall could get you kicked out of school. They take things like that very seriously these days.

I know it's know fun not being able to use the file sharing networks, specifically if you have a legitimate reason, but it's the school's network, the school's bandwidth, and you need to play by their rules.

The second "know" in that last paragraph should be "no." Oh god...nothing like answering posts at 3am. :)

You could try social approach. Ask the admin *real* nicely if you could borrow his station. Or maybe open up some port for your connection. Use words like, "lonely", "meaning of life", and it might do the trick :p

i'm very surprised that it is possible for you to have downloaded a file sharing program in the first place on the college computers. this alone would have been enough for a computer ban at my old 6th form.
