I am fairly proficient in html, although this is my first serious project, which I hope to ultimately publish on the web. Now my question: Can anyone speculate why a webpage would show up perfectly in Opera and Firefox, but not in IE (tables end up being completely missed up, graphics wont load)? This happens on all computers I have tried. When I do upload page and files onto the web, once again Opera and Firefox display the site perfects, but the IE shows a completely blank page (only the black background shows up) Keep in mind this is a basic webpage with one small javascript. I am completely baffled. Any ideas?

Thanks!

Each browser implements HTML slightly differently. Obviously, IE doesn't like something that you've done, while Opera/Firefox understand your code.

Given that 90+% of users use IE, I code for IE and then tweak to make the other browsers work.

If you can provide a link or display the code, people here can probably help figure out what needs to be changed.

Be sure to come back and let us know if our suggestions helped!

Each browser implements HTML slightly differently yes, but what really counts nowadays is the implementation of CSS.

IE lacks in bother departments, however, whereas decent web browsers like Firefox, Opera, Safari and so on, are miles ahead.

Currently about 85% of users use Internet Explorer. I would code initially for IE and then tweak for the other browsers, but I think that's wrong. I do the complete opposite. If you do it the way Don is suggesting, you are effectively punishing those of us who use decent web browsers.

If you code first for a compliant and worthy web browser, you will see that Firefox, Opera, Safari and so on render the site almost identically. This is when I usually "tweak" for IE, checking every time I change the CSS that it hasn't changed much in the compliant browsers.

The most likely reason you're website looks "weird" in some browsers and not in others is probably because you're using a WYSIWYG tool to create it. WYSIWYG tools, like Dreamweaver and FrontPage, create invalid pages with a lot of extraneous markup. Coding by hand is the only way to get it "just" right, I think.
