I recently took ownership of a website and I wanted to change some details, I was informed the site had been used with FrontPage previously so I edited each page and opened it with FP, I kept the index.htm and about.htm pages and after making changes, uploaded the site again.
I was prompted that INDEX.HTM already existed and if i wanted to delete it, so I said Yes.
I am new to web site publishing so please go easy on me!
Now whenever I try to access the site I get HTTP 404 Not Found on www.mysite.com I even tried entering www.mysite.com/index.htm but still get the same 404 error.
Each time I publish the site from frontpage it says all was successful.
Can any one please offer me some advice as my site is now down and I dont know what else to do.
Thank you.

Connect to your web-space via FTP to see if the index.htm file is actually there or not. then double and tripple check all of your connection settings in FrontPage.

Hi, It now says www.mysite.com does not exist and cannot connect to ftp:/mysite.com
I assume connecting to the web-space via FTP can be done in FP.
I've tried publish and import but nothing comes up.
Please help!

I think I found the answer (although I have not tried it yet) I read that I need to publish the web from File> Publish Web in forntpage so it is published by HTTP and not FTP as FTP is what the wizard uses and bypasses frontpage details.
Does this make sense to anyone?

Ok, My frontpage (part of office XP) does not have the "Publish FrontPage Web.." option as shown in the following support page: http://www.claranet.co.uk/bsupport/frontpage.php
Is there a way round this?

I've never used Front Page, it inserts too much crap into the code, so I can't give any specifics on its use.
You can connect to an FTP server through Internet Explorer or any number of FTP clients (the latter being more reliable). To connect, just put the ftp address in your address bar: ftp://somesite.com (or whatever it is). You should then be prompted for your username and password.

Thanks for your input. It seems Clara.net does not support frontpage 2003 only 2000.
I guess I will have to dig out office 2000 and give it a go, whatever FP2002 did when I initially uploaded to the site, it appears to have deleted or corrupted everything as I cannot access it via ftp://mysite.com it just says searching for items... then windows could not establish a connection.

Front Page would not have corrupted your connection. Check what the actual connection settings are with your provider.

It seems because i used ftp: instead of http when i publised the site it damaged the frontpage extensions that where already on the server. FP wont allow me to publish the site by http now as I get the error that these extensions are missing and prompts me to use ftp instead.
I have emailed clara.net to reinstall these for me. Simple but costly mistake to make!
