ive got htaccess working on my server

however i can only use .htaccess once

if i create a new .htaccess in another directory then it wont accept the password

but, if i remove the other one, the one that wasnt working becomes active

obviously theirs conflict between the two

am i missing something...

do all password protected directories have to be defined in a single .htaccess file???

These files cascade downwards, so if you place a .htaccess file in your root directory, /, and another in a sub-directory called /downloads, then when a file is requested from the /downloads directory Apache will merge the two files and use all the directives. In the event of two directives conflicting with each other, the one closest to the file will be used, in this case /downloads/.htaccess.

so how to i get around this..

Why not set one password protected parent directory as a gateway, then cascade the others you want protected within it but set as unprotected? That way the one login will gain entry to the whole sub-folder tree.
