how to run php on windows xp

Specs: Windows XP
i am a learner
i am learning how to write php code, i write it in notepad, save it with .php extension and what next?
what should i do? the server side thing is not clear to me as i am not using any client server environment.

You just run the php executable with the filename as a parameter. Have a look at this article.

You could use WampServer 2 to visualize a web server. It comes with Apache, MySQL, PHP, and phpMyAdmin.

Your PHP files would all go inside a sub folder of the 'www' folder' and then you just open them up in your web browser like http://localhost/mysite/file.php
