May I know if anyone know how to protect wmv file? I have disabled the right click on the webpage but moving the cursor to the WMP screen, i can still view the URL from the "properties". Appended below is the relevant page:
http://jiamin1.freeownhost.com/qianbeiwmv/baiyi.htm

I was also told by kind HERB from Window 95/98 forum that my server is wide open. If i just enter http://jiamin1.freeownhost.com/qianbeiwmv/ in the browser then all of my wmv files are there for the taking. I do not know what to do next.
Thank you for your kind assistance.

I'm not that good with server setups - that's why I use a good host - but one quick and dirty method to prevent people from browsing a folder it to put a blank index.html file int he directory. The web server is set to look for default files when a user browses to a directory. If it doesn't find one (and directory browsing is allowed) then the suer will see the contents of the folder. This will at least prevent most users from browsing the folder until you can configure the web server to not allow folder browsing for specific folders.

As for preventing users from getting the file if you put it on a page - you can't. You can disable right-clicks and youcan prevent people from accessing the file directly - but it doesn't address the fact that once the user views the page the file is already on their computer. It is in their cache. There are also applications that allow you to capture vidoe being displayed on your computer.

If your goal is to prevent people from passing off your work as their own, I'd suggest putting a ciopyright, or some other message, into the video. Some people will disagree with me - that making it more difficult to get a file cuts down on the number of people getting it. But, once the file is obtained by one person there's no telling how many people will have it after that.

Thank you so much for your kind assistance.
I have inserted the index file into the directory and it helps.

The right URL should be as follows:
http://jiamin1.freeownhost.com/yingyin.htm

I wonder if there is any way to block the URL in the properties?

I don't understand. You meant to block the URL to the WMP file? If so, I *believe* you can set up directories where files cannot be accessed directly - they must be called from another page. As I said, I don't get into server settings too much.

But, as I also stated, it still doesn't stop users from getting the file out of their cache. I work for a software company that produces Windows and Web based software. The developers have implemented "tricks" to prevent people from seeing the code on our web pages, but I can still get the pages through my cache.

Thank you so much for your time and effort in responding to my queries.

I know not many fans from my site are aware that one can get the pages through cache.

http://jiamin1.freeownhost.com/yingyin.htm

When I go to the above site and click one of the WMP link, it will go to a page with video clip. Even though I have disabled the right click, but when the cursor is moved to the window media player screen, the right click becomes enabled and the direct URL link can be viewed from the "PROPERTIES".
For instance, the first one is :
http://jiamin1.freeownhost.com/qianbeiwmv/luori.wmv

Even though I have added a INDEX file in http://jiamin1.freeownhost.com/qianbeiwmv, this URL still allows everyone to open or save the WMV file. Is there anyway where i can block all my wmv files so that other people cannot have direct access to them?

I have also noticed that after converting to ASF, nobody can have access to the asf file in the temporary internet files folder- it will show "The page cannot be displayed" instead of the video clip.

That still won't prevent people from obtaining the video by using screen recording or stream recording programs.

Please let us know if you found someone's advice to be helpful.
