It confuses me a lot. Plese tell me what features and prerequistes should be borne in mind while plannig to make a website. I want to get search engie optimization done for my site. Secondly,a windows based site should be opted for or a linux based. Plese enlighten me.

Reply: (edit)Gaurav Arora, The best place to start is to define your goals for the site. For example, do you only want to show services, physicians, etc. in a "brochure fashion," meaning static pictures, content, etc. Or, do you want to be able to manage the content yourself, provide dynamic articles or dynamic functionality to the site, customers logging-in, etc., which would require the site to be driven by a database. Once you have established the functionality, depending on the programming language used, costs should be relatively equal. If you are receiving fixed-price quotes, you should ask to see the hourly rate and an itemization of how the hours make-up the quote. Any legitimate firm should be willing to provide you with this information. If I can help any further, please let me know! Curtis Hughes StreamLogic Inc. http://www.streamlogicinc.com

Reply: (edit)Dear Curtis Thanks a lot for your gesture. I further wanted to know how technically intense the job of "search engine optimisation" is? Somebody is doing it free of cost whereas somebody is asking for a decent amount? My aim is to have my site on the first page when keywords are given at a search engine. Secondly please compare the features of a windows based site to a linux based site and how to make a choice. Thanks and regards Gaurav

Reply: (edit)Gaurav, Search engine optimization is very tricky and has to be calculated. Someone who is doing it for free may not know all of the details on how to get your site ranked. There are MANY ways to get good rankings and all of them need to be used. I would ask each firm doing SEO to outline their approach and what they will be doing. Don't be afraid to ask what you are getting and how they will approach it. Lastly - I always choose Windows hosting, simply because this is my development platform of choice. I find it easier to develop applications on a Windows platform. There really is no set standard, and you may also be able to Google "linux hosting vs windows hosting" Curtis Hughes StreamLogic Inc. http://www.streamlogicinc.com

Reply: (edit)Creating a website for viewing is a complete piece of cake and shouldn't cost much at all, find a good web designer that can either create a nice template or find a template that you could buy. Creating a website that is dynamic that users can interact with would cost much more and would require a professional programmer. Just an FYI: stay away from the "self managed" dashboards or control panels many companies try to sell. They absolutely suck and you can't make your website look seamless. Get a professional to design and maintain your site for you, you will be much happier in the end.

Reply: (edit)The only real advantage of having Windows hosting is that you can use ASP and different kinds of databases (but most hosts use MySQL for both Linux and Windows anyway). -Matt

Reply: (edit)My platform is on linux and I prefer a linux platform which is much cheaper than the windows servers. Also if you can get a dedicated server, you could use the unix background threads and java etc to do all the background automated processes. For SEO, your site must have good content and also friendly to the robots. You can get a lot of article about SEO from the net. ctj
