Hi again good people;
Let me start from the beginning.
I have posted on this before but it's been some time ago. And times have changed.

I have a personal website for friends and family that dealt with common issues related to computers and my limited knowledge. It was hosted by geocities.

For obvious advertising reasons I started looking for a new FREE host. I found one that had no popups or popunders or banners.

Less than a month later a very small text banner was added to the top of the page. I could live with that as it was very small.

3 months later the small banner has one of the largest banners I have ever seen added to it. Now half the screen is banner. My site is now being indexed by google too which I did not want. For $2.00 a month they say the banners will be removed. Where will this one end?

So I tried another free host with a very tiny banner at the bottom. Downtime has been 4 out of 8 days with no way of contacting them about the problem.
Also there is no source code when viewing the site.

So I looked into CHEAP web hosting. After all my site is not worth paying too much.
And I'm not having much luck with alternatives.

I did like what one host offered for pricing but I think I might need a paid domain name.
Which would up the price.
Also I did not need everything they had to offer. I contacted them to ask about domain requirements versus subdomain names but never receieved a reply.

To make a long story short I am looking for a host that will offer just a few things.
1. Free or cheap.
2. Minimal or small banners.
3. No popups or popunders.
4. Upload via web interface.
5. Paid domain name not required.
6. Source code displayed.
7. Normal graphics file formats.(jpg,gif,etc)
8. Under 10 MEG. Currently under 5.

As most of you know I am running out of options. But I would like some advice on hosts. My last two choices were not so good.

I don't want to list my site address or email here to avoid spamming but I assure everyone it is legitimate.
I will provide it to the regulars upon reqest.

Thankyou;
RandyL

I don't know where you are located, but every ISP I know of in the US allows it's users to host their websites for free: usually under 10MB, no banners or popups/unders, etc, etc. Some only allow uploading of content via FTP, but that's actually better than a web interface.

Have you checked with your ISP?

Everything Michael J said, except replace US with Australia.

Why type what's already there? LOL.

Please let us know if you found someone's advice to be helpful.

Hi everyone and thanks for your feedback.
I think I should reply to all of you individually since you all took the time to reply to me.

Hi BigBob;
I guess I should have also said that I was looking for opinions on hosts from those that had personal experience with them.

I haved search extensively only to find that the stated terms or services were incomplete or changed until after signing up.

Sorry about not being more precise on my question.

Hi hot tuna;
That is a very interesting link you provided.
I never found it on my searches. I guess I need to refine my searches.

I will need to look into all the hosts it can provide. Thanks for the link.
Do you have a favorite?

Hi Michael J and Sci-Guy;
I hear you loud and clear about ISP hosting.
I live in the U.S. and my ISP is MSN.

MSN does not support a stand alone fully functional web site.
They have (groups) or (spaces) or (photos).
All have preformatted limitations.

(groups) will allow certain html tags but not many. And the pages still have to fit within the format.
Bad ISP. BAD BAD BAD.

Hi everyone else;
Do you have a favorite host provider that is low or no cost that does not need a paid domain name?

By the way I created 26 pages using notepad.
Now an old man who is new just needs a good reliable host.

Thanks again to the best people on the web;
RandyL

Hi there, we can offer you very cheap hosting at £2.45, if you use less than 150mb space and 2gb of bandwidth then email us what you will use and we will make you a custom plan for a lot less.
