Generic to Flash

Is there an open source program that is available for download that is similar to how flash operates. I have been playing around with flash on a friends PC and find it very interesting to work with but would like to trial a similar program before I shell out all that money.

Macromedia Flash offers the trial versions.

As for the opensource one, it's also interesting to me. Made a search and here it goes *haven't tried*.
