I've noticed that Yahoo now has up to 1 gig of storage space for free accounts.
I'm assuming (maybe wrongly) that this space is available for all activity under a given Yahoo screen name.....email or the free web space that is avaible with any free Yahoo account.
If the above is true....does anyone know if it is possible to access that free yahoo web space via generic ftp.....as opposed to using their online upload/edit utility?
Thanks

Very, very unlikely. Your mail storage will be separate from your web storage for many reasons, security being just one. Would you want your mail files stored on a web server?
Now, if you get yourself a gmail account (also with a 1GB storage limit) there is a 3rd party utility that allows you to "mount" the storage space for your gmail account as a drive letter on your computer. You can just drag and drop files from the virtual drive. The program is called Gmail drive and is available here: http://www.viksoe.dk/code/gmail.htm

Really?.....Cool....that's the same idea. A free account for online storage...but that's easy to access.
I've heard that Gmail has a downside - something about it being scanned for key-words. Do you know if that....or anything else "fishy" applies to files copied there via ftp (or does the system treat everthing the same and scan it for content?)
Thanks for the feedback.

that's paranoia :D
nothing is secret on the internet, any admin between you and your receipient can read your e-mails. In here, free e-mail like gmail/yahoo is preferred than a company's e-mail. Because in company's e-mail sometimes the boss "wants" to read his employee's e-mail and the admin cannot say no :P
gmail scans keywords, so it can put relevant ads. Yahoo also doing this eventually... It's free, what do you expect? I prefer this than something like "forced to click ads" in exchange for free e-mail storage.

Is Gmail still opening new accounts? I checked the site and only found a message about a "limited number of test accounts" with no place to open a new one.
Also...I think that attached files are limited to 10 mb each. I would use the storage with that ftp utility to tansfer a folders of pics often being 35+ mbs in size.
Do you think the 10mb file size limit for email attachments would also apply to items being trasfered with the ftp utility?
Thanks

I think it's still invitation only although some people who signed in on the waiting list are now have their account.
you can send an e-mail to yofazza -at- gmail.com and I'll invite you in.
about your original problem, I think you're asking too much :D you're asking for "big", "free", "secure" storage with "ftp". maybe it's better if you get your own space through a hosting company.
I never tried GMail Drive so I'm not sure if it fits you or not, but I do heard that you can drag & drop files/folder to your account with it (and it's not FTP).
