im intersted in your opinions for the background, black looks great when viewed on 800*600, but on 1024*768 its to in your face

i was thinkin of using a background image of some computers perhaps...

A javascript marquee that slowly rolls a few quotes taken from satisfied customers across the background (mostly across the bottom and top of the screen) would be very interesting. Make them gray, and display them at different sizes and on different levels. They should really appear to be floating, not rolling. Make them fade or collect towards the center of the screen. A variation, for example, would be to have about three to four quotes for each page that start at either end of the screen on the top and bottom and fade in as they make their way towards the center of the screen until they are in full view. These could even pertain to what the page is about (say, how reliable your assembed systems are).

Otherwise the black is fine, though you might want to add a border around that whole box. If you don't like black, try an extremely light, muted color. You've already got grey, so a fading grey-to-white border might work (maybe a pixel or two wide). Dark tones more or less require matching (aside from black, which is a combination of all displayed colors).

Jamie,

At 179 KB that image is too large, it extended the load time with a dialup connection by an extra minute. I can't do better than this - I now have it down to 92 KB at 50% original quality, which for a background is acceptable.

If you want it let me know where to, and I'll email it to you. BTW, what happens when users have larger than 1024*768?

hmmm thats a good point. little bit anoying as that image took me a while to make. Suppose im going to have to scrap it.

Im really stuck on this background issue, i cant use a solid colour as it dominates the webpage for 1024 * 768 + viewers.

maybe a small image tiled wood work

thnx for your help, ill look into it later

Rest seems okay, as long as you remember to have a clear contrast between background and text colours. And yes, a smaller version of that image or similar repeated on the screen would give better loading times.

I'm assuming nothing is actually set to function on the site at present? I ask because my browser choked on the contact form for some reason.

One more tip, re. use of graphics. I noted you used one of Microsoft's XP icons as the graphic next to the word "Navigation". This is just an exercise for your study course so it isn't really crucial here, however if you ever do take up web design professionally, you will need to be aware of copyright and permitted usage.

Microsoft are very specific about permitted use of their graphics. They would allow that icon to be used only if it is done within the context for which they created it. That means used to mark out a part of a site, or a feature in an application, which handles exploring of the computer or opening of folders. It would be open to discussion whether nvigation of a web site was considered similar, so professional use of it for such as the Navigation title might be challenged.

I know, I know, it's only a school project, but this is advice for the future when money is changing hands. You know as I do that M$ lawyers are trigger happy when it comes to protecting their master's property, look at what happened to that poor kid in Canada with his mikerowesoft.com domain.

Well, the Canada kid used his own name Mike Rowe to create a small personal domain called mikerowesoft.com. He used it to offer free scripts and small apps he'd written himself. Gates' goons got onto the case and threatened to sue him for "stealing the Microsoft mark" by using a similar sounding name.

It was big news in the Canada/US media, and there was a lot of support for him, even a fighting fund was started for him. Anyway, in the end he settled for a pay-off from M$ of verious of their products like a top grade Xbox, and tuition paid for MSCE study, plus a trip to Redmond headquarters.

Point is, that kid was only 17 years old, and was entitled to use the domain name, as it was based on his birth name. Just shows M$ have no scruples at all, when they go suing a high school student just for showing what he could do.
