When I double click my PHP files, I get a 'Windows cannot open' dialog. I have been trying to associate a program with my PHP files (example: Notepad2) but by right clicking and choosing open with > browse program > select wanted program > and select 'always use selected program' does not work. It does not save the settings for any other PHP file.

I have also tried editing the file types. Still does not save.

Is there another way to change how I can automatically open an editor like Notepad2 by double clicking a PHP file instead of right clicking ect..??

Well, right-clicking, selecting a program and selecting the checkbox has always worked for me.

But, another option is to open a windows explorer window (not IE) and go to Tools<Folder Options. Then go to the File Types tab and scroll down to the PHP file type. Then click the Advanced button. Just in case the settings are "mucked up" I would delete all the entries there.

Then create a new entry. Name the action "open" and in the "Application used..." enter the path tot he program you want to use followed by "%1" (with the quote marks). Place a checkmark in the Use DDE checkbox and place the name of the application in the Application field and "System" in the Topic field.

Here is what my entry looks like:
Action:
open

Application used to perform action:
C:\PROGRA~1\PHPEdit\PHPEdit.exe "%1"

Use DDE: (checked)

DDE Message:
[EMPTY]

Application:
PHPEdit

DDE Application Not Running
[EMPTY]

Topic:
System

Hey Michael J:

Thanks for your response.
The only problem with the File Types, is I only see PHP3 listed. And when I try to add the regular PHP extension it does not save it.

I've must of done something, because before my php files were opening with just notepad. Now nothing. (except of right clicking.)

Is something small like this even worth a system restore?

Thanks again.

Well is PHP3 listed as the extension or the file type? It might be that PHP extensions are considered PHP3 file types.

Personally I would find a decent PHP editor and install it. It may be able to change the association. Without being in front of your computer it is difficult to provide any more helpful information.

As to whether it is worth a system resore or not is up to you. It depends on how much trouble it is to open PHP files vs doing a system restore.

however, one way to more easily open PHP files in notepad would be to first open notepad and then drag the PHP file into the notepad window. It is by no means a fix, but a slightly improved workaround until you get a permanent resolution.

PHP3 is listed as the extension and the file type.

I installed Rapid PHP 2007, but that didn't help either.

I went ahead with a system restore (I must be extremely lazy) and am now at least able to open my php files with notepad when double clicking. The php extension (with PHP3 gone after the restore) is still not listed in my file types. That seems weird to me.

Thanks again for all of your suggestions.
