Is there no place where you can just buy a domain name without making commitments? I would like to buy a domain name and have it as my own, not having to worry about renewing it every year or so.

Fact is, you don't buy it at all, no matter where you go to. What you pay for is the rights to use that name to identify with you, for a specified period of time. IOW it's like software, you purchase a licence to use it, not the item itself. This is why if you buy a domain name which sounds or reads like a company's registered name, they can take it away from you for "passing off" (trading off of their good name and reputation).

Network Solutions has an offer now where you can pay for a domain name for 100 years. I don't think I would want to do that but I guess there are people who do. Check it out there.

Nice thought. Problem I would have with Network Solutions is they do not comply with British privacy and data protection laws, so that is a non-starter.
