Subject: DHCP FTP HOST...can i do it?OS: xpCPU/Ram: 512 |
Comment: I want to host an ftp, the address or location doesnt matter. I only need about 10mb. I dont care the speed or anything, it just needs to have a constant address with a passworded directory so that no one can get in besides me. I have several clients set up to send log files to an ftp. However, I cant host my own FTP off my pc because the darn IP changes every 4 hours. And it would be to inconvient to go around and change the settings of each machine manually. Thanks alot.

Reply: (edit)FTP accounts are around $5/month, even with very respectable hosts like Pair networks. Most also host HTTP connections, so you would get some webspace as well.

Reply: (edit)If your IP changes often, you can sign up for a free account at http://www.dyndns.org. Your IP will be attached to a subdomain name you can choose yourself (like : ian.homedns.org). There are also some programs available you can use to automatic update your ip in the dns-server of dyndns.org. But if you only need 10 MB, it may be a lot of work for you...

Reply: (edit)To be completly honest I could settle for much less space than that. I will only use it to transfer about 1 to 100 log files that are only about 2k a piece. Even a 1Mb FTP server would suit just fine. I wish I knew how to get around the DHCP loophole. Does that http://www.dyndns.org allow remote loading? (only using to store files, not publishing to the web) I know angelfire doesnt allow that.

Reply: (edit)The 'dyndns.org'-thingy only solves this problem: "However, I cant host my own FTP off my pc because the darn IP changes every 4 hours" (quote from your first post) You changing IP will be attached to one subdomain-name wich doesnt change. If you choose that option, you'll host your own ftp-server. You can choose whether you want to start a webserver aswell or not.
