Comment: I would like to buy a dot com domain name. I have browsed the internet and don't feel comfortable with websites that I have never heard of. I visited GoDaddy.com and I have heard of this site. My question is: Once I purchase the domain I want to associate my webpages URL to it. Is this done through GoDaddy.com and other companies that sell dot com's? I have free webpage space through my broadband ISP and have a URL that I co-created with my ISP. I want my new dotcom domain to bring up this page when entered. Really, All I want is an easier URL of my choice but do not want to get into monthly fee's. I can buy the domain for a yealy fee and that is fine but do not want to get taken in. Any tips? Thanx DJMike

Reply: (edit)My ISP also doesn't allow it. I suspect most ISP's would disallow the use of domain names. Please let us know if you found someone's advice to be helpful.

Reply: (edit)I purchase my domains through domainmonger.com They have a free service called DNS Plus and one of the features of that is the ability to create a web forward. So, you could forward your purchased domain to your ISP domain. You can also choose to "hide" the ISP domain once the user enters the site. Note that this is done by using a single frame. Something you may or may not care about. Also, many ISP "hosting" is very limited. You can get a decent starting hosing package for just a couple dollars a month! Michael J

Reply: (edit)Godaddy is fine. As with most companies the mind numbingly poor web documentation is difficult to determine how to actually use your resources. I have had to call tech support at godaddy and they were prompt and friendly and pointed me to the correct answer. You are mistaking two things though. One is a FQDN and the other is a DNS entry for that FQDN. I read it wrong and answer it wrong too. So get off my case you goober.

Reply: (edit)I host my own web site/ftp site/telnet/exchange server and my isp is SPEAKEASY.NEt They pretty much allow you to do what you want, as long as you don't cause trouble on thier network. my domain name is, chrismr.com if you like, you can park your domain on my WEB server, no charge. and if you dont like it, you can always move it.

Reply: (edit)I purchased my domain through ServersAustralia for AUD$13 a year. Then I used EditDNS to redirect the site to my WebServer. http://www.serversaustralia.com.au/ http://www.editdns.net/ If you want advanced features on EditDNS you just donate a measly USD$5. EditDNS has URL Redirections perfect for what you want. Good luck. Regards,Corey Seydler Admin @ ausaf-bf2.net
