Comment: I need a fresh pair of eyes to have a look at this site I'm working on: The Psychedelic Click Homepage I'm having trouble with div widths in the XP version of IE. Looks fine in my IE, Firefox and Netscape, but I was told that the left menu buttons are overlapping the middle div. I don't have XP, which makes things a bit tricky for debugging. If someone can spot where I've gone wrong, I would wholly appreciate it. I am not a number, I am a slave like the rest of you.

Reply: (edit)There's no such thing as "the XP version of IE". It is the same Internet Explorer that you run on 2000/ME or any other operating system (assuming the version is the same, i.e. not 5.0 and 6.0). The site looks fine on my "Windows XP" version of IE. I suspect the person reporting the problem has adjusted their font settings. If I increase my font size, then there is a problem with the left nav section being on top of the content section. You can see this for yourself in IE. Open the page and then hold down your Ctrl button and use your scroll wheel to change the font size. You can also do the same thing from the View<Text Size menu. You can prevent this problem by specifying the exact size you want that font to be in your page. Michael J

Reply: (edit)Cheers mikey, I guess that I should check my facts before posting.... I honestly didn't know if IE6 sp1 was xp exclusive or not, or whether the person reporting the problems was using the beta of IE7. Personally I avoid using IE like the plague... I totally agree with you on the font issue as I managed to get access to an 'xp' system yesterday and everything looked fine, until I played with the font sizes. I could set a fixed font size, but I do think it makes a page more accesible if a user can specify which size font they are most comfortable with. Thanks for the pointers, any idea if you can use a 'font size sniffer' (like a browser sniffer script) to perhaps point the user to a different CSS so the page displays correctly for all?? No, don't think there is. A better option would be to create the layout such that resizing the font will not break the layout. I'm sure you could redesign the page so if the left nav section increases it doesn't overlap the content section. But, there is just no way to avoid any and all problems. Some users that have limited visibility use the accessability option to greatly increase the fonts. But, for them 'design' is not an issue anyway. Good luck. Michael J
