I am in the process of changing my website from a subdomain type of webhost to a new webhost with my newly registered domain name. I have had fairly good search engine rankings on the old. I want to do a redirect of my whole old domain that will hopefully maintain my indexing and rankings.

Considering this: meta http-equiv="refresh"... is highly frowned on by search engines and is commonly used by spammers. As such, THIS SHOULD BE AVOIDED.

My website is straight forward -- articles on metaphysics/philosophy -- no devious or deceptive elements or intentions in my redirect.

It looks like a .htaccess file is the best way of avoiding problems with the search engines. BUT I do not have that option with my old subdomain webhost service.

So my question is what is the best way to do this redirect without setting off any alarms with the robots? What is the best code that will tell the search engines that it is a permanent and legitimate change? Is some JavaScript better?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Serge,

Well, that's the problem. I already did a fair amount of research on this. And that 301 redirect is to be placed into a .htaccess file. I cannot upload such a file to the server of my old site's servers -- These files just are not allowed by some webhosts.

umh ... just did some research using google and found this page

http://www.webconfs.com/how-to-redi...

you can use .htaccess but if it is not the only way ... you can add the PHP code mentioned to your INDEX.PHP file ... not sure how to deal with your other files

beyond that ... not sure what to suggest
