The right book would depend upon your current level of expertise. For example do you know anything about web development (HTML, CSS, etc.)? Do you have any other programming experience?

Personally I did all of my PHP learning on the web from free tutorials and guides.

i used 2 books when i was learning php. the second one that i got was "the essentials of php: second edition" that was a pretty good book for me trying to figure out simple small things that i didnt know about. i got this other book a little while before that and it had all kinds of examples that helped me learn how to use PHP, i dont kno what that book was though. about the first book that i mentioned, they have like 8 errors in the first 100 pages. it's so annoying that i fregging wrote in the CORRECT way to do it in the burrowed book. anyway, hope that helps ya. good luck
