Greetings Gents!

I came across an old derelict website of mine recently - I hadn't seen it in years, and was suprised it was still floating out there on the interent. Anyway, there is still quite a bit of information, text and graphics that i would like to save to my hard drive for future projects. What is the best way to go about doing this?

Right now I was thinking about using Firefox and choosing File>Save Page As>Web Page, Complete. Does that save all the pictures and text intact? Or do I need to download the pictures on by one? Thanks for your assistance.

I would think that it would have take you less time to actually try it than posting here. LOL.

Anyway, in IE the same option does indeed save all the content to your hard drive, but it reformats it so that the URL paths in the htm file (for images and such) are relative to a special folder saved on your hard drive. So, if you want the original files in tack, this is not a good option. But if you don't have access to download the files it is better than nothing. There are 3rd party apps that do a much better job. Do a search for them.

Thanks for the quick response. Just for my own clarification - So, according to what you said, it 'does' save everything to my hard drive, but why then did you say that its not a good option if I want the files intact?

Quick update -

For anyone else out there trying to archive their websites...I simply used the Firefox method described above, and in addition downloaded all the images manually.

Ironically enough, after years of languishing on the internet with nearly no page views, all of this material is going into publication next month in a book that will be available at book stores all over the world. How ironic that in this day and age, it is actually 'print' that will get my own unique message out to the people rather than the 'internet', the medium which at first showed so much promise for that very thing.

So long.

If all you want are the images, then it will work fine. The problem (at least in IE as I don't have FF at work to test) is that it puts all the associated files into a single folder on your hard drive and changes the paths in the HTML file accordingly.

If you wanted to republish the site you would either need to use thie new paths - which means a separate folder for every page with any images that are used more than once will be duplicated. Or go back and edit all the paths.
