I have been working on this for quite some
time. I want to have my web server work
like everyone else's, where when my domain
is typed in, it shows up in the address bar,
instead of the ip number showing up. Can
anyone help me?

I'm running Apache 2.2, and was messing
around with virtual server, but I don't
think it will do what I want. I think I
have to setup a DNS server, but I have tried
several times and failed to get what I want.

I want to do this replacement on my server.
I was really hoping Apache would do it for
me, but it doesn't look like it will. Do I
have to do DNS? Or is there another way?

You don't need to set up a DNS server to serve web pages via Apache. Your ISP provides all the DNS you need and from there to all the DNS servers around the world. All a DNS server does is convert a web address to an IP address. You should never see the IP address in the address bar if you enter a web address. Thats all handled by the HTTP protocol in the background.

Virtual server allows you to run multiple web sites from the same server. Apache does not provide DNS.

So what exactly are you trying to achieve?

If you go to gamesbydallas.com, my site, you'll see my ip address in the address bar, and I want to see gamesbydallas.com. And when I click on the dallas link to go to gamesbydallas.com/dallas, I want to see gamesbydallas.com/dallas in the address bar. How do I do that?

Edit:
I"m using GoDaddy, do I have to change something there? I have the option of of working with A, CNAMES, MX, TXT, SRV, and AAAA.

Is this where I should be?

Edit:
I had domain forwarding on...should that be off?
I think I'm finding my problems...am I?

Edit:
Oh crap, now my site is down. I changed where the A host points to, and now it doesn't work...well I can get my numbers off of other domains, no problem...I hope.

That exactly what I do see. Not an IP address to be seen anywhere.

Thank you very, very much. I know it doesn't seem like you did much, but you did. You put me on the right track. The problem was that I was forwarding my site.

Thanks again for the help.
This has been a year in the making.

Ah crap, I just realized that now I really do have to do virtual server...ah well, you may see me posting back on here soon.

thanks again,
Dallas
