Hi Sandy,

Under Xconfig/Protocol - Extensions - try unchecking XInputExtension

if this didn't solve the problem provied output of the log information which you will get by activating the following:

under others activate the "show progress and show host relpy".

Hi Frank,

i've tried your suggestions but still failed. I've managed to login as the superuser, i.e root, & successfully the hp desktop appears. But the desktop doesnt appear when i logged in as other users. After the login/pwd & the initial startup screen, then it nothing happened.

i've tried running the xstart with the log & it shows everythings ok. In the command box, i put "pwd" & it shows the correct output.

where do i get the log from???

i appreciate your hlp & advise very much. thanks.

Hi Sandy,

Check the exceed.log in your exceed application/user directory if there are any entry's.
Could be a wrong font setting.

Hi Sandy,

Please provied the whole *.xs file(s) for the session maybee I am able to reproduce the fault on my system.

Anyway it seems to be not an exceed problem.
If both user starts dtsession (or try to start) than you have maybee a missing path for the secuser.

Login on telnet as secuser and start dtsession manually.
This should show you more detail about the missing enviroment.

I'm not sure as to where / how to solve this as this being the 1st time i'm handling HP-UX. Thanks. Hope this helps.

Hi Sandy,

More than one soultion could solve the font problem, the easy one would be,
activate automatic font substitution.

Xconfig --> Font --> font Database --> left bottom.

If this didn't solve the problem provied out put from your root Xterm session of the command.
"xset q" this will show you which font server is used, should be the same as for the secuser.

Hi Frank,

i chked & found the "automatic font substitution" already set. So i unset it, tried to x-win but failed, & re-set it again. It still fails. Nothing happens after the blue screen "starting common desktop".

I successfully x-win with "root", then use "xset q" & retrieved the log.

I then tried x-win with "sceuser" & while it still hanging on the blue screen, i telnet in & run "xset q".

I found nothing different between both logs. Even the $PATH are similiar as follows :-

D:/ProgramFiles/Exceed7.00/Exceed/Font/misc,D:/ProgramFiles/Exceed7.00/Exceed/Font/75dpi,D:/ProgramFiles/Exceed7.00/Exceed/Font/100dpi,D:/ProgramFiles/Exceed7.00/Exceed/Font/andrew,D:/ProgramFiles/Exceed7.00/Exceed/Font/dec100,D:/ProgramFiles/Exceed7.00/Exceed/Font/dec75,D:/ProgramFiles/Exceed7.00/Exceed/Font/euro,D:/ProgramFiles/Exceed7.00/Exceed/Font/hpfont,D:/ProgramFiles/Exceed7.00/Exceed/Font/pc,/etc/dt/config/xfonts/c,/usr/dt/config/xfonts/c,/etc/dt/config/xfonts/,/usr/dt/config/xfonts/,/usr/lib/x11/fonts/iso_8859.15/75dpi

I'm confused. :(

Hi Sandy,

it seems so that secuser can not resolve the font:
-dt-interface system-medium-r-normal-l*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*
You can check it by using the "Resolve font Name" function in your font database at X - Server side (Which is on your PC)
If the X-Server can not find the font then try to reinstall the font or create a font aliase with exceed.

Your font server path show's that you use Exceed fonts which are stored on your PC and some fonts on your HP.
This would mean that you have setup the X-font server on your HP System.
If you didn't use a font server on your HP than remove the lines from your font database at the PC.

Please check out if this solves the problem,
in the meanwhile I will try to find out why your root user uses another font than your secuser.

So please if it solves the problem give a short notification to me so that I can stop further investigation.

Hi Frank,

I've compared the .dtprofile from both root & sceuser... the only difference is that at the very last line in sceuser, there's an extra command :

# If $HOME/.profile (.login) has been edited as described above, uncomment
# the following line.
#
# DTSOURCEPROFILE=true
export DTSOURCEPROFILE="true"

Other than that, the rest of the file are the same. Could this be the problem??? Can i modify this file to remove/comment the extra line???

In the meantime, i'll try to remove the lines which does not begin with D:\

Hi Frank,

it still doesn't work.

Could it be that the rights to some of the fonts in the host cant be access by the user during x-win???

Hi Sandy,

Check if the font " -dt-interface system-medium-r-normal-l*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-* " is accessible.

You can use the "Resolve font" option in the font database to check it. (described in a previous mail)

Do you tryed to uncomment the
" export DTSOURCEPROFILE="true" " line ?

Need .dtprofile from root and secuser.

Sandy,

don't forget that the problem is only fixed, not solved.
To solve you have to analyse the .dtprofile
