Comment: Hi, I've just installed linux on my laptop. It's a compaq 1600-XL 144. Installation went smoothly, but i cannot fire out how to configure the X window system. It seems the SVGA server cannot find out the appropriate clock mode for any display resolution. As of now I ws able to use only the VGA16 server, no big deal on a 14.1 TFT. The video chip is a trident cyberblade i1. The X server reports a tgui9420dgi. Any help would be very much appreciated. Thank you.

Reply: (edit)I got 800x600 on mine by setting up fbdev (load the kernel-fb rpm under Mandrake 7.1 and then change the /boot/vmlinuz & System.map links to point at the fb numbered images) Used VGA=0x315 to set console mode to 800x600, then configured the XFree driver to use the FBdev server. My laptop is a HP Pavilion N3350. I haven't gotten around to detailed setup info, but this may help someone in the meantime. The chipset is that same Trident CyberBlade i7.

Reply: (edit)I installed Mandrake 7.1 about two weeks ago on my Compaq 1600XL-145 and it went without a hitch. Display properties are no problem although the best I can get so far is 256 colors. Has anyone had any luck configuring the audio? I also managed to get my home network to recognize the linux box so that I can share my DSL connection. If I can be of any assistance drop a line.

Reply: (edit)Hi, I have a compaq 12XL223 13.3 TFT and cyberblade i1. When I install Mandrake 7.1 expert mode, all work properly because mandrake install the kernell 2.2.15-fb frame buffer. But now I install Mandrake 7.2 to use kde 2, and koffice. But the kernell frame buffer is not here. Thank you for a solution. Best Regards. Pierre-Yves

Reply: (edit)Guys, as Randy told early, (at least in Mandrake 7.2) you can solve such problem with adding/modifying lilo config to 'vga=0x315'. It works for me. Interresting source is http://home.flash.net/~bdropps/xconfig.htm.

Reply: (edit)I have bought the Supersonic as well. I can run X with 1023x768 but without accelerated graphics. Easily obtained by appending 'vga=791' to the lilo boot prompt 'linux'. But still I am looking for a suitable driver. Cheers.

Reply: (edit)Hi, I have a Supersonic too and I found a solution for the x-server problem! I switched the graphic mode in lilo to 1024x786 (16bit) with "vga=791". I created a new XF86Config file (don't forget to backup the old one!!). Then I did the following steps: 1.) Creation of the framebuffer devices: for i in 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7; do z=$(expr $i \* 32) ; mknod /dev/fb${i} c 29 ${z} ; done (write it in one line) 2.) Start the framebuffer x-server: XF86_FBDev -bpp 16 --Hopefully you will see the x-server screen. 3.) Start x: startx -- -bpp 16 I hope, it will work with your system, too!

Reply: (edit)Addition to message number 18: I forgot 2 important points in my message: 1.) You have to configure your kernel in the following sections: Code maturity level options ---> [*] Prompt for development and/or incomplete code/drivers Console drivers --->
[*] Video mode selection support [*] Support for frame buffer devicees (EXPERIMENTAL) [*] VESA VGA graphics console 2.) You have to install the package xfbdev. In SuSE you will find it in the series xsrv.

Reply: (edit)Hi @ll, I have a gericom supersonic with a trident cyberblade i1. My solution was: I am using XFree 3.3 and X-Server XF86_SVGA. I set the symbolic link /var/X11R6/bin/X to /usr/X11R6/bin/XF86_SVGA gesetzt. I downloaded the XF86Config for XFree 3.3 from Tim Dropps Homepage http://www.unm.edu/~tdropps/xconfig.htm. With that config I get 1024x768 and 32 bit. hope this helps Joerg

Reply: (edit)The X Window 4.0.2 fully supports the Trident CyberBlade i1. I've Gericom Supersonic 1000 MHz (that's not mistake: 1 GHz! ;) with this card and above easy hints didn't help (not tried all). So I'm going to use 4.0.2 and suggest all of you too. Take look at http://www.xfee86.org/ Upgrade & enjoy Pawel

Reply: (edit)I bought the Gericom Supersonic (1GHz, 256 MB, 20 GB) at Mediamarkt and managed to get the trident cyberblade i1 card to run with Suse linux 7.1 at 800*600 with the xsvga driver of XFree86 4.0.2 (sax2 -m O=vga helped to get sax2 running). Higher resolutions were not possible even after upgrading to 4.0.3 (from www.xfree86.org). I always get a nice picture at 1024*768 but only on a small stripe on the right of the display. The rest of the display remains black. Changing the display strech option in the BIOS didn't help either.Has anyone had similar experiences and found solutions ? Sven

Reply: (edit)Hi, I also bought a Gericom Supersonic 1GHz, so I have met many difficulties to configure X Window (4.0.2 under Debian). However, now it works by using Trident CyberBlade specific options in the XF86Config file. These options are : "CyberShadow" and "SWcursor". I give you the critical part of the config file and for more information, see the trident manpage. Section "Device" Identifier "Trident CyberBlade (generic)" Driver "trident" VideoRam 8192 Option "CyberShadow" "on" Option "SWCursor" "on" EndSection
By specifying this, you can use your screen in 1024x768x16. I hope it will also work for you...
