Hi everyone...
I am trying for a couple of days now to install KDE on FreeBSD 6.0 on a computer with 3 GB of disk space and i constantly fail. I wonder if the disk space isn't enough. I have allocated 2 GB to /usr, and 350 MB on /.
I also have about 50 MB on /var. When i run pkg_add -r kde i get the message that the filesystem /var is full but if i give to much disk space to var then during the installation of the OS i have to llitle space for use, should i completely remove /var? . When i install freebsd i choose x user so as to have x window installed ( or isn't that correct?). How much space do i need in order to have kde up and running like in Linux?
thanks in advance for your help

Wow, that's kind of squeezing things. I've never attempted installing FreeBSD on 3GB of disk space. I usually allow at least 4GB for /usr.

The only thing I can recommend is choosing the "minimal installation" option, and then add X and KDE after that to see what you get.

If that doesn't work, you have to assume that nothing else will.

In addition, you could trim kde down a bit. Like say, install kdebase-3.4.2_2.tbz first. That would give you the bare minimum. With built-in progs like cdcontrol and burncd, you could get by without some components like kdemultimedia, or K3B.

With KDE in mind, you're going to have to be a little creative. Maybe a decent window manager is better for your needs. FreeBSD is likely not the best choice, given your limit on disk space.
