Comment:

I am running Windows 98 and have recently tried to clean up my machine by removing some programs that I don't use. However whenever I boot up now I am told that the following files are either missing or corrupt...

vserver.vxd
vnetsup.vxd
vredir.vxd
dfs.vxd

and when windows starts I get an error messaging telling me that msnp32.dll is missing. My machine seems to work perfectly well without these files so how can I stop them being requested every time I re-boot.....Please Help!

Find a healthy 9x machine and search for your missing files. Take note of where they are located. Then copy the files to the same place on the corrupted machine. Hope this helps. Worked for me!

Concerning Response #7, do you mean that I cannot rely on CAB files to work correctly? Also, it is my understanding that to install/uninstall printer and file sharing, you pretty much HAVE to use the Win98 CDROM or use CAB files. Any clarification would be most helpful. Thanks!

We ran into the same problem...missing Vserver.vxd file. Fixed by following the steps on http://support.systemaxpc.com/kb/document.asp?ID=1204

Luckily we have two computers, extracted the file from Win98 CD, saved it to a floppy and then used dos to restore it to the problem PC. Worked fine.

I had the same problem with Win98 plus the msnp32.dll error and fixed it by first using the System File Checker tool found in Accessories\System Tools\System Information\and then the Tools tab. Extract one file from the install disk(Win98 folder) and type in the file name msnp32.dll and save it in the prompted folder which probably will be C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM and hit START. Then uninstall MICROSOFT NETWORK CLIENT from CONTROL PANEL\NETWORK, restart, and reinstall it. Worked for me, good luck.
