When i log in the linux box and write the command echo $ORACLE_SID then it shows me a value which is different then given in the .profile file. I was wondering that the command "echo $ORACLE_SID " is getting the value from where if it is not the same given in the .profile.

After ORACLE_SID is set in .profile, you might have a command that changes that setting.

As a test, put an echo command as the very last thing in .profile, such as:

export ORACLE_SID=PROD
EDITOR=vi
LPDEST=mylaser
. /d01/oracle/applprod/PROD.env
echo "ORACLE_SID=$ORACLE_SID"
