Comment: We run a SGI Powerl Irix 6.5 . I added a NT workstation to our network. I can telnet, ping from the pc. I can ping to the pc from the unix machine but cant get Telnet or FTP to see or open to the PC. Ive got the pc in the hosts file. Is there some other place it needs to go? The unix will even try to open an old address we had at our old location that is no longer there(it was a unix based machine) What am I over looking? It should be possible to Telnet and ftp to PC if I can telnet from the PC!?Please help so I can hopefully started xfering files !!

Reply: (edit)Telnet is predominantly a connection tool from unix to unix machines, not unix to nt. However, ftp is fully compatible both ways. The Irix box should have the ftp daemon running (check this), all you need to get then is an ftp utility to run with NT (Maestro, etc.)

Reply: (edit)Thanks for the info. I have ftp on the Unix and had ftp and telenet in "DiskAccess" program on the NT.Coulnt get it to ftp connect from Unix. I dont have DiskAccess on the NT anymore. I guess I'll try and find Maestro for the NT and check my config then. Thanks Again Simon

Reply: (edit)The way FTP or Telnet work is that the workstation (unix or NT) u r trying to connect FROM needs a telnet of FP client. and the workstation u r trying to connect TO must have a Telnet or FTP daemon / service running to respond to requests from the client. Almost all OSes have telnet and FTP clients in-built in them. Unix boxes come with FTP and Telnet Daemons (or services) by default. NT workstations don't run FTP or Telnet server services by default. Microsoft IIS is the MS verion of web/FTP server. other FTP servers for NT are WarFTP (ww.jgaa.com), serv-U (www.cat-soft.com). I don't remember of any telnet servers for NT (though I have used some in the past...U should be able to find them on the Net) When u had DiskAccess, it was providing the telnet and FP services, now that u don't have DiskAccess on the NT box, there is nothing on the NT workstation which would respond to telnet/ftp requests...so u need to install some sort of telnet or TP daemon on ths box....does this help?

Reply: (edit)here's something more... If all u want to do is transfer files from/to the PC to the Irix...then u can ftp FROM the PC to the Irix box and ftp files. Using TP, u can transfer files both ways..just use "get" to download files and "put" to upload files.

Reply: (edit)Thanks for help. Got "Warftp" from the site www.jgaa.com you suggested and put on the NT4 workstation. Seems to be doing lovely. Thanks Dave
