I have a linux redhat 6.0 running on a pc with a realteck cn930 network card.
The response is instant when we telnet from linux to another machine.
The problem we face is the very slow response in getting the login
prompt when we telnet from other machine to Linux. The ohter machine immediately says it is
connected to linux. However, it takes 3-4 minutes to get the linux
login prompt on the computer. When I issue ps command, meanwhile, I see
the in.telnetd on linux. So, linux is aware of the connection
yet it is very slow to send back the login prompt. Once we get
the linux login prompt the rest is quite fast. So something must
be delaying the completion of the telnet negotiation sequence? The same problem exists for the ftpd too. When I ping linux from other computer,
the response is very fast. Can anybody suggest what might be causing the delay?
Thanx ..

Its your /etc/resolv.conf
i bet if u go to the comp in a web browser its instant, yeah? why? because your PC doesnt do a reverse DNS lookup on ur IP then... when u telnet/ftp into ur linux box, it'll do a dns lookup on you, to see who you are, if u either correct the settings in the /etc/resolve.conf file, or just back it up, then delete the contents all together, it should be fine !
