I have an external SMTP server (IP address) and I need to use it from UNIX (SFU) to send emails. I have mail/mailx/sendmail etc on my UNIX machine. Can some one please tell me how to configure that to send emails either from shell or commandline/scripts etc. TIA

Add an option SMART_HOST to your sendmail.mc and make new conf. All emails will go to smarthost that you put. For details read a manual in sendmail src.
