I was given a computer that has the UNIX O/S, can I remove this and install DOS or Windows? I would like to give it to a nephew for games and word processing.

yes you can remove UNIX. All you have to do is get a windows boot disk then boot from that disk windows boot disk. After booting from floppy just type FDISK then pick REMOVE NON-DOS PARITION from the option. After removing non-dos then create a primary parition. After that restart your comp then install windows :-)
