is "disc1" a CD from which you are installing RH?

if so, during the RH install, did it display options for you to select the HD on which to install linux?

I didn't see any of those options. The list of items
appeared and then before I could read them it
disapered. Can I try to install again and if I press
pause on time can I see the options? As my win XP is
on HDD-0 my new hard drive should be, might be on
HDD-1. So can I change HDD-0 to HDD-1 on the
start up list in BIOS. If needed can I then chage it
back to HDD-0?
disc1 is the first disc of installtion discs that came
with the book.

Changing bios HDD designations might not be possible and probably result in more problems even if you could switch.

"came with the book" might mean your CDs are different from the "conventional" install CD's which offer a window-oriented install that includes screens which allow you to install RH on the drive/partition of your choice.

When you boot the CD, see if it says something like "Press F1" which might allow you to select how the install runs and/or some options.

If this does not work and you have a CD burner, try down-loading RH9 from the web
(google: redhat 9 iso ).

BTW, before you install, you MUST have a Windows retore/recovery diskette or a bootable Windows install CD.
You also MUST create a linux recovery/boot diskette when offered this option during install.

Thank you for the info. When I hit enter or rescue,
the following comes up on my screen.
Uncompressing linux red hat....OK booting from
kernel and then it stays like that for good.
When I tried to install it the first time I got to a point
that I had to use my mouse to continue but the
mouse didn't work, so I went to the PS2 mouse port
on the back to remove rhe mouse and connect to to
my USB keyboard and toched the power cable which
restarted the computer so the kernel installation
might not have been complete.
