Comment:
Last night something happened to my Unix (SCO) machine and now I cannot login as root. The date on the /etc/passwd file is about 3 weeks old and I didn't change the password. Does anyone know how to fix this? I can still log in as a regular user, but not as root. Please help!

In general, you'll have to boot the system off something other than the system disk. A cdrom, etc.
Then mount the root filesystem on say /mnt. At that point you can cd into /mnt/etc and get at the passwd file (or shadow file since the password is encrypted there in many SVR4 versions of unix).
Either restore a known good passwd file or use vi to remove the encrypted passwd field for root (no passwd set).
