pci card on ultra 10 has only 256 colors

I am running win nt 4 on a pci card, when i have windows open and i try to change the settings for something higher than 256...I have only one other choice thats like 1 million...and when I chose this one my pci window shuts down anyone know why? and how i can improve the amount of color? thanks
