Do you use the sudo program??? If not, you should. It's free on the net and saved me from the exact same problem on UnixWare. I had set sudo up so that my own user id could perform ALL root functions which included being able to do a passwd root.
I could then change the pass word without needing to know the old password.

for solaris on spac. boot the machine off the media and mount the root directory then edit the /etc/shadow file with a NP in the passwd field. then reboot you should be able to login with No passwd. then change it after oyu log in. i know thats not sco but at least you have an idea if that is possable.
