Comment:
I had a server crash and can no longer use the root login as the password has changed. Is there anyway of restoring the root password?

hi Leigh,
don't know anything about Unixware. In most cases it is sufficient to boot to single-user mode, mount your filesystems r/w and set a new root-pw with the passwd-cmd. You needn't know the old pw to change root's pw in su-mode.

But don't you usually need the root password to boot into single-user mode? I know my IRIX machine does.

- boot from the installation disk. - fsck root partition ie: fsck -y /dev/dsk/c0t3d0s0 fsck -y /dev/rdsk/c0t3d0s0 - mount /dev/dsk/c0t3d0s0 /a - using favorite editor edit /a/etc/shadow if using shadowing, else edit /a/etc/passwd and make the second field for root null ie: root:fhsdhfhsd:16655:::::: would become root::16655:::::: - reboot -- -s (reboot space hyphen hyphen space hyphen s) login as root and set the passwd
