Hi,

I have just inherited a Silicon Graphics O2 workstation. The previous owner had lost the root password and don't remember the password anymore. I would like to ask if anyone can help me to reset the root password or restore the root password. This operating system is "IRIX 6.5 is SGI's mature 64-bit UNIX operating system"

Boot the miniroot i.e. Go to install system software from PROM, use a cdrom with installation tools, go to a shell and edit /etc/passwd and remove the password portion for root.

hm, if you have a linux-box (with scsi) and xfs-kernel-support, you only have to mount your irix-drive as second disk on /mnt/disk2. then edit the password file "/mnt/disk2/passwd" and delete the password entry for root.
Thats all. The next time you boot on your sgi workstation, you can login as root without a password. ;-)
Sometimes there is a bad superblock on the sgi-drive on the mount command.
Solution: make a "xfs_check /dev/sdb1" (or any other drive your second scsi-drive is enabled) and a "xfs_repair /dev/sdb1" under linux. It works!
Have fun ...
