Ok, take 3! The system removed the URL's I entered on take 2. Sorry for so many postings.

I had intended to post this as a follow-up to another thread "www.computing.net/unix/wwwboard/forum/558.html" about this subject which helped me to successfully remove LILO. Unfortunately, the software at this website would not allow me to post a reply to an old message.

Thanks to the comments on this forum as well as some other helpful sites (listed below), I was able to successfully remove LILO from my NT boot sector. Before naively running fdisk /mbr, I suggest doing a bit of research into how Windows NT boots. I used mbrtool from DIY Data Recovery to:
1. check that LILO was indeed installed in my mbr (it's pretty obvious)
-> mbrtool /x:d /d:0
2. make a backup of the mbr to a file
-> mbrtool /x:b /d:0 /f:mbr_save
3. rewrite/refresh the mbr
-> mbrtool /x:m /d:0

There were some strong warnings at Microsoft support about using fdisk /mbr (mbrtool does the same thing) on a WinNT disk. DIY DataRecovery also have strong warnings about using their mbrtool to rewrite the mbr on an NT disk with a LILO bootloader. However, I knew I could back out of any trouble with the backup copy I made (which I backed up to my c: drive just in case...).

Here are the sites I found most helpful:
1. Windows NT Boot Process
"msep01.eng.ohio-state.edu/lud/computer/mcse/boot.htm"

2. DIY DataRecovery
"www.diydatarecovery.nl/~tkuurstra/index.htm"

3. Bootpart
"www.winimage.com/bootpart.htm"
I tried using this tool to fix my boot sector but it did not work. I presume it fixes a different part of the boot sector than the mbr.

Hope this helps,
William
