I have been away from UNIX for quite some time, and recently have been asked to help with problems in installing a 9 gig SCSI hd as a second drive on an older UNIX box, running SCO UNIX (3.2 v 4).

I looked around on the net and found APLawrence.com and their excellent help files, so armed with that, I leapt from frying pan to fire.

The hd is attached to the SCSI controller as device 6. the "mkdev hd" has no problem seeing the drive and accurately reports the number of blocks as something like 575K.

after relink and reboot, I run "mkdev hd" again (to bring up divvy), and this is where the fun starts.

i put in a (slightly less than) 2 gig partition and then try to install a filesystem. i get no error messages, and everything appears to be fine...but when i try to mount the new filesystem, i get "unknown filesystem type" ...indicating to my untutored mind that the filesystem creation failed.

I realize I am not holding my mouth right on some crucial step here, but I am out of ideas on what it might be.

To make this even more fun, the machine and HD are in denver, and I am working remote on a dial-in from providence.

If anyone feels like lending a hand, I would certainly appreciate it.

Have you checked the parameter of that hard disk? As my understanding, SCO 3.2v4 cannot create root file system beyond beyond sector 1024.

I had met this problem before, about 7 or 8 years before. I cannot remember exactly, but may have two solutions:
1. Is LBA supported? if so, use LBA mode to set the sector number less than 1024.
2. Create /u or other file systems, but /root has to be less than 512M.
