The system I am connecting to is a unix sco openserver release 5 machine and I am dialing into the machine.
I get the login prompt, but after entering the username it hangs for about 40 seconds, then gives the password prompt. I enter the password and it hangs again about 40 seconds before the login is complete. Then everything runs smoothly. Any suggestions on the problem?

If you are using DNS check the name resolution in both direction (Name/IP address) on Both sides (Client/server) If you are not using DNS check your host fiels on both sieds.
Telnet use the Server name instead of the IP address also you are connecting via IP adress.
It is a commen problem for telnet, but this would mean that all other services like ftp is working faster.
