FreeBSD and updatedb

I wish to use the locate command in FreeBSD but I noticed the database needs updated and I usally use updatedb to do this but I guess its a Linux only command or is there the same command under another name in FreeBSD?

What does this mean that running it as root will make the files inaccessible by all users who login?
