I am using a sparcstation 5 and want to install linux. I type in

My best guess: Either the CD is corrupt, or it's not the SPARC version of Linux.

A bad magic number when booting from a cdrom usually means the cd is dirty or the drive is not a sun compatable drive. Sun compatable drives need to have a certain sector size. My advice, get a used Plextor cdrom, they all work with Suns.

Problem Description ================ When trying to boot off cdrom:
>b sd(0,6,2)
the boot fails with the following error message:
"bad magic number in disk labelling"
Problem Solution ============== The CDROM was the last SCSI device and not terminated. After terminating the scsi chain, the system could boot from CDROM. ==
Is CDROM external or internal? Ive seen sparc 5's with int&ext thats all..
OK, I just had this problem, and here is one way to get by it when setting up a new or new to you machine: do a 'stop+A' to get to the 'ok' prompt, and then boot using 'boot -r cdrom'. This will reconfigure the devices that are attached to your machine. Once the machine has fully booted, then issue the 'devlinks; disks' command. You should then be able to format your disks. Hope this helps.
