Does anyone know of any references to how to build an ISP. I need to shed some light on DNS servers and why we want to have some on our network rather than using UU Net's or someone elses. All i know is that before we had our own browsing was very slow and when we added our own browsing speeds picked up considerably. Any help or insight would be greatly appreciated!! Tony

O'Reilly, DNS & Bind is a very good manual if you would like to learn how DNS work and how to configure it.
Effectively, having your own DNS will speed up http request because there is less lantency in name resolution.
Second advantage, is to have full control and authority on your DNS zones, then domains and ip class can be added and mofify quickly

Thanks for the follow-up Danny but I was hoping for something more like a basic ISP backbone architecture with an explanation as to why you would want the DNS servers on the edge of your network. Makes perfect sense to me but I have a couple of idiot technicians that are trying to outsource our DNS servers and use our upstream ISPs which are two states over. If you think of anything else let me know. :-)
Summary: My DNS server has been rebooting all the time for some reason. Intermittently it does that. This doesn't look normal. Any hints are greatly appreciated. Thanks...
