do you would like to recreate the original root password or would it be enough to get root access and change the unknowen password ? Which unix (HP-UX,AIX,SUN) ?

Sai,
you should be able to boot the computer in single user mode and change the password. there is a possibility that you may have to mount some of the drives, usually just /usr to have the passwd function.
