Hello,

Disclaimer: I neither setup this system nor have any ability in QNX, I'm just a lab monkey in the great cog of science.

I'm working with an old Dell Dimension 8250 running QNX 4 v6.3 setup under a very specific configuration for our lab (as such I have very little flexability for making major changes as the system is setup for a very specific application). ONLY QNX 4 and our control software for the experiment are on this box. Current Bios revision is A04.

The problem we have is the optical drive isn't mounting. Running a custom script for burning a cd (using the cdrecord command) yields the following error: "cannot open dev/cd0"

Which presumably means the cd drive isn't mounting.

I tried cdrecord -scanbus, which prompts me to specific a user, cdrecord -scanbus root doesn't accomplish anything.

In the bios the CD-rw drive should be showing up as Secondary Drive 0, but it shows as unknown device.

Notes/Anomalies:

1) I've tried 4 different optical drives now. The one currently in this machine is one cannibilized from our backup rig (same OS, dell model number and bios version) and works in that system.

2) During bootup I get a "Diskette Drive 0 seek failure
Secondary hard disk drive 0 not found"

Then I'm prompted to select partition 1,2 which doesn't require any input to proceed.

3) Unlike the other machine, this one requires IRQ 5 to be reserved, freeing it in the bios allows QNX to boot to the login screen but it hangs at a flat grey desktop and you cannot access the right click menu.

That being said, what options do I have beyond beating this with a stick?

And I think I've made matters worse.

I tried an autoconfigure of IDE devices (the alt e-f-b thingie).

CD rom still not detected.
