Help...If I telnet into the unix server I can't ping the internet. I have checked the network setting ie...ip, sm, gw and all seem to be correct. What else can I check ?? does a unix server require a dns ??

There isn't much info, but perhaps a firewall is filtering icmp packets, or your mask is wrong. You need to ping by IP address rather than name to see if you get a response, if you do then if you try by name and don't get there then it is a DNS issue.
It is not necessary for a UNIX box to be on a DNS for it to be able to ping other machines in a network. It seems that you have checked all the necessary things such as IP Address, Subnet Mask, gatway. Try pinging the IP address of the card in the unix system. If you are able to ping yourself then it is possible a cable problem. Also try pinging the unix system from another system on the network. If you can't then you will probable need another network card for that system. I work for a company that can supply you with anything you need for HP/9000, SUN Microsystems, RS/6000 and AS/400. We can give you a good deal on anything (including a new network card). E-mail me. I'm more than willing to give you a hand or at least find out the information form some of my co-workers.
