Subject: Can I run a shell function in background

I have two long running procedures within a single shell. I would like to separate them into functions and run them concurrently. When trying to run an internal function in background with the & I get the following error: functest.sh[4]: /tmp/sh382.1: cannot open. Is running a function in background this way even possible??
