I am hoping to buy a cable card for internet connection rather than a modem are there any features I should look out for when purchasing on the same lines as a Winmodem can not be run under Linux.

If your talking about a cable modem that just uses a standard Network Card usually 10mbs. I think some MediaOne providers use 100mbs. There is an external modem that attaches to your a cable ans your nic. You can purchase this separately but it's usually specific to the technology of your cable provider. I have a cable modem on @home. I just got everything from my provider. If I bought my own modem it would have cost about $400-$500.
