Hi,

I am hoping someone can help as I have searched through almost every FreeBSD/Unix related site/diary,etc. With out any luck.

This is a common problem I have come to realize, but when trying to fresh install FreeBSD 4.8 (i386) off CD, right after the boot from CD menu appears and I hit enter to have it scan/display/probe the hardware or devices of my comp, it gets to ata0: Resetting Devices and just hangs.
At first I thought it was a ide cable problem seeing as I had the cdrom as my primary Slave and my HD as my Primary master. So I decided to swap the cd to the secondary master and keeping the HD as the primary master. No luck. I've found multiple ways of trying to troubleshoot this issue, from configuring the .conf files to recognize device=0,etc.
Also turning off the UDMA setting in BIOS to pretty much limit its potential.
I have not found a work around for this, and I was wondering if anyone has some tips?
I appreciate any help, thanks.

Comp specs:
P4 2.4GHZ
ECS sis648 mobo
512 MB DDR400
40GB 7200rpm HD
Standard video card
(this is a barebone web/game server)
